This page lists all 150 psalms in the King James Version, each with its first KJV verse. Psalm 1 opens with "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly," and Psalm 23 with "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." Each line links to the psalm's own page, where the full King James text is printed verse by verse. The KJV is public domain, so every word of it can be read, printed and shared here for free.

Each psalm page leads with the World English Bible, a modern public domain translation. A button near the top switches the verses to the King James wording, and the full KJV text follows further down.

What is the King James Version?

The King James Version is an English translation of the Christian Bible made for the Church of England. It was commissioned in 1604 and published in 1611. It is also called the Authorized Version. Most printings of the KJV today reproduce the 1769 Oxford edition, edited by Benjamin Blayney, and that standardized 1769 text is the one used on this site. Its English is older than ours: thou and thee, hath and doth, sheweth and knoweth. The Psalms keep their headings in the KJV, such as "A Psalm of David" above Psalm 23.

How the KJV and the World English Bible differ

The two translations often agree closely. Psalm 46:1 reads the same in both: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Elsewhere the wording moves apart. Psalm 23:1 ends "I shall not want" in the KJV and "I shall lack nothing" in the World English Bible. Psalm 139:13 reads "thou hast possessed my reins" in the KJV, where the World English Bible has "you formed my inmost being." Reading both side by side helps with the older words.

The book of Psalms in the KJV: numbers and length

The King James Version has 150 psalms, numbered the same way as on this site and in the World English Bible. Psalm 117 is the shortest, with 2 verses. Psalm 119 is the longest, with 176 verses, and the KJV prints 22 headings inside it, from ALEPH to TAU, one over each block of eight verses. The Catholic Douay-Rheims numbers most of the 150 psalms differently, and the Catholic psalms page gives a table of both numbers.

NKJV, audio and printing

The New King James Version is a different translation. Thomas Nelson published it in 1982 and holds its copyright, so this site cannot print it. Each psalm page links to Bible Gateway, where copyrighted translations such as the NKJV can be read. This site has no audio recordings. Every psalm page can print the whole psalm, or only the verses you tick, in the King James Version, as a plain page, a framed sheet or a verse card.

Questions

Is the King James Version of the Psalms free to use?

Yes, outside the United Kingdom it is public domain. In the UK the right to print it is held under a royal patent, but that has no effect elsewhere.

When was the King James Version published?

It was commissioned in 1604 and published in 1611. Most printings today use the 1769 Oxford text, which this site uses.

What does Psalm 23 say in the KJV?

It opens, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." The Psalm 23 page prints all 6 verses in the King James Version.

Is the NKJV on this site?

No. The NKJV is under copyright held by Thomas Nelson, so it cannot be printed here. Each psalm page links to Bible Gateway for it.
