Praise the LORD's Name
Psalm 135 summary: what it means
Psalm 135 is a call to praise. It opens by telling the LORD's servants who stand in his house to praise his name, because he is good and has chosen Jacob for himself. Then it gives reasons. The LORD is above all gods and does whatever he pleases in heaven, earth and sea. He raises clouds, makes lightning and brings out the wind. He struck the firstborn of Egypt and killed kings such as Sihon and Og, giving their land to Israel.
In verse 15 the psalm sets the LORD against idols. Idols of silver and gold have mouths that cannot speak, eyes that cannot see and ears that cannot hear, and those who make them will be like them. The psalm ends by calling the houses of Israel, Aaron and Levi, and all who fear the LORD, to praise him.

A prayer from Psalm 135
LORD, I praise your name, for you are good, and it is pleasant to sing praises to you. I know that you are great, above all gods. Whatever you pleased, you have done, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the deeps. You cause the clouds to rise and bring the wind out of your treasuries. The idols people make have mouths but cannot speak and eyes but cannot see. Keep me from trusting in the work of human hands. Your name endures forever. Blessed be the LORD from Zion. Amen.
