The 30 psalms people look up most, ranked by US monthly searches, with the most searched single verses and what each top psalm says.

Why is Psalm 23 the most famous psalm?

The numbers cannot say why people search, but the text shows what they find. Psalm 23 is short, only six verses, and it holds to one picture: the LORD as a shepherd and the speaker as one of his flock. It moves from green pastures and still waters to the valley of the shadow of death, then to a table and a cup that runs over, and it ends with dwelling in the LORD's house forever. Verse 4, "I will fear no evil, for you are with me," is the fourth most searched verse in the Psalms. The heading reads "A Psalm by David," which makes it the most searched psalm whose heading names him.

Psalm 91 and Psalm 119

Psalm 91 is a psalm of protection. It opens with the one who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, resting in the shadow of the Almighty, and it names the dangers that God guards against: the terror by night and the arrow that flies by day. Verse 11, about angels put in charge to guard you, is its most searched verse. Its heading names no author. Psalm 119 is the longest psalm, with 176 verses, and it keeps returning to God's word and law. Its most searched line is verse 105, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path."

Psalms 139, 27 and 1

Psalm 139 is about being fully known. It begins "LORD, you have searched me, and you know me," asks in verse 7 where the speaker could go from God's presence, and ends by asking God to search him again. Verse 14, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made," is the sixth most searched verse in the book. Psalm 27 opens with a statement and a question about fear: "The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear?" Psalm 1 opens the whole book. In six verses it sets two ways side by side, and it pictures the one who delights in the LORD's law as a tree planted by streams of water.

What the most popular psalms have in common

Several of the most searched psalms are short enough to learn by heart: Psalm 23 and Psalm 1 have six verses each, and Psalm 27 has fourteen. Many speak straight to fear. Psalm 23:4, Psalm 27:1 and Psalm 91:5 all speak, in different words, of not being afraid. Many of the most searched single verses do the same kind of work, such as Psalm 34:18 on the broken hearted and Psalm 147:3, "He heals the broken in heart." Six of the top ten psalms have a heading that names David. Psalms 1, 91, 118 and 119 have no heading, so the text does not say who wrote them.

I built AllPsalms because I could not find one site that covered all 150 psalms properly. I am a Christian and a reader of the psalms, not a scholar or a minister. What I can do is the work: put every psalm in one place, in plain English, with the text unedited and every claim sourced.
