Random Bible verse generator
One tap for a random Bible verse, in the King James Version or the World English Bible. Draw from 240 well-known verses picked by hand, or from all 31,098 verses of the 66 books. Choose a part of the Bible, keep to short verses, and skip the ones you have already seen.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
King James Version
How it works
With "Well-known verses only" ticked, each tap draws from 240 verses picked by hand for this page: widely quoted verses that make sense on their own, such as John 3:16, Jeremiah 29:11 or Psalm 23:1. Untick it and every tap is a fresh draw with an equal chance for each of the 31,098 verses in the part of the Bible you choose, genealogies and law codes included. Pick the whole Bible, one testament, a group of books such as the Gospels or the letters, or a single book. "Short verses only" keeps to verses of 90 characters or fewer in the World English Bible, the kind that fit on a card or a lock screen.
Tap "Show the verses around it" to read the verse in its place, with the two verses before and after. When the verse is from the psalms, a link opens that psalm explained verse by verse on this site.
King James Version or World English Bible
The King James Version is the classic English Bible, with "thee" and "thou". The World English Bible is a modern English translation. Both are in the public domain, so the verse you get is yours to copy, print, put on a picture or post. Nothing to sign up for, and nothing you do here leaves your browser.
Questions
How does the random Bible verse generator work?
Each tap draws one verse with an equal chance from every verse in the part of the Bible you choose. The draw uses your browser's built-in random number generator, so no list is shuffled in advance and nothing is sent to a server.
How many verses can it pick from?
All 31,098 verses of the 66 books of the Protestant Bible, as numbered in the World English Bible, or 240 well-known verses picked by hand. Choose a testament, a group of books or a single book to narrow the draw.
Which Bible versions does it use?
The King James Version and the World English Bible. Both are in the public domain, so any verse you get is free to copy, print and share. Modern versions such as the NIV or ESV are under copyright and cannot be reproduced here.
Why did I get a verse that makes little sense on its own?
With "Well-known verses only" unticked, the draw covers every verse, including lists of names and temple measurements. Tick it to draw only from 240 verses picked by hand because they read well on their own.
Can it avoid giving me the same verse twice?
Yes. With "Skip verses I have seen" ticked, the generator remembers the last 500 verses it showed you, in your own browser only, and draws again if it lands on one of them.
Can I share the same verse with a group?
Yes. "Copy group link" gives a link that opens this page on the same verse, in the same version, for everyone who taps it. Use it for a small group, a class or a family chat.
Can I get a random verse for a topic?
For the psalms, yes: the random psalm generator draws from verses picked by hand for topics such as anxiety, sleep or healing.
